The valley is sealed off from the Cascade Vary for the northeast and from the Klamath Mountains into the northwest. From the far north the terrain is rugged and intensely forested, getting wetter around the coastal aspect and drier and barren in the higher northeast. Inside the south the Central Valley is shut off because of the transverse ranges,
